We are pleased to announce that in conjunction with the EU Maritime Day celebrations Dr Bernardo Obando will be speaking on:

Title: Boarding Ships: A Pirate's Perspective.
A discussion on the typology and root causes of modern piracy and the practicalities of being a 21st century pirate.

Dr Bernardo Obando started his seagoing career as deckhand on board bulk carriers in the early 80's and continued progressing through the ranks up to master mariner serving on a wide variety of vessels. In the mid 90's, he joined the Seafarers International Research Centre, at Cardiff University, where he conducted research into maritime labour economics, seafarer training and fraudulent practices relating to seafarers certificates. He returned to sea and is currently working as harbour pilot and lecturer on maritime security.
