SEMINAR: Seafarers’ Rights: Why do they matter?

SPEAKER: Ms Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of Seafarers’ Rights International and formerly, the Legal Officer of International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) for 15 years. Ms Fitzpatrick is also author of “Seafarers' Rights” (OUP, 2005) and a solicitor qualified in the UK and Ireland.

ABSTRACT: The seminar will examine the position of today’s seafarer in the modern maritime industry. The speaker will discuss current seafarers' problems - especially from a legal perspective. Issues about to how to protect and advance the seafarer's rights will be given a special focus. In this context, the speaker will also introduce the new research centre, Seafarers’ Rights International, which was launched at the International Maritime Organisation last September to coincide with the World Maritime Day.

The lecture will be around 40 mins with time for questions and answers. Refreshments to follow. All are welcome.
